Holidays Can Be Stressful!
The holiday season is a time for joy, togetherness, and celebration. It's a time when we share our love (and gifts) with others, enjoy special meals, and indulge just a little. But, it comes with its load of stress. How so?
Firstly, there is the planning. Precision planning can make us miss the forest for the trees!
Even if you aren't a planner but a participant, holidays can get overwhelming. Between social overstimulation, the combination of loud environments, high expectations, and disrupted routines, our nervous system gets into a state of agitation. When we are overstimulated, our prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for patience and clear thinking, begins to go offline.
How do we reset our nervous system then? By practicing small, intentional Pauses (check our Intentional Pause Framework), you effectively lower the cognitive load on your brain. This allows your nervous system to exit the high-alert state, making it physically easier to engage with others from a place of genuine presence rather than reactive exhaustion.
From social commitments to gift-buying pressure, the holiday season can lead to exhaustion and anxiety.
Here are five ways to ensure your holidays are not only happy but also mindful and meaningful.
1. Set your Intention For This Season
Before diving into the whirlwind of holiday preparations, take a moment to reflect.
Ask yourself what you want your holiday season to feel like. Is it about connecting with loved ones? Resting and recharging? Giving back to the community?
Write down your intentions and use them as a guide to prioritize your time and energy. When you’re clear on what matters most, you can let go of unnecessary obligations that don’t align with your goals.
Ever thought about Mindful Gifting?
Choose meaningful gifts with intention. Write heartfelt notes. Consider gifting experiences or acts of service.
2. Practise Gratitude Daily

Gratitude is a powerful way to bring mindfulness and happiness into your daily life - and it's especially important to keep in sight during holiday season. Everyone has faced holiday disappointment, and sometimes it can threaten to overwhelm the real perspective of the holiday.
To avoid this, and to have a balanced, contented approach, try practising gratitude during the holiday season. ZEN-it offers a few contentment and gratitude exercises, including a simple writing exercise to inculcate long-term gratitude, a session to appreciate the little joys in life and Gratitude journal prompts. These could be simple joys, like a kind smile from a stranger or the warmth of a cozy blanket.
Be sure to keep these little joys in mind, and express your thankfulness, as you enjoy your holidays!

3. Be Present In The Moment
The perfect gift, the ideal meal, the flawless schedule, can all get exhausting real soon.
Holiday gatherings are opportunities to connect deeply with the people around you, but it’s easy to get distracted by never-ending tasks or even devices. Make a conscious effort to be fully present. Turn off notifications, engage in meaningful conversations, and savor the tastes, sounds, and smells of the season.
Practicing presence will help you create lasting memories and deepen your connections.
This season, try shifting your focus toward Presence Over Perfection. High-pressure expectations are often the fastest route to burnout. By practicing Compassionate Accountability (check our Framework), you give yourself permission to lower the stakes. Remember that a messy, imperfect moment where you are actually present is infinitely more valuable than a "perfect" one where you are mentally miles away, worrying about the next task on your list.
If you need help to practise being present in the moment, ZEN-it offers a number of simple guided mindfulness sessions, from beginner to more advanced levels. These are perfect to start the day, or at any point when you need a moment to ground yourself!
4. Check Your Social Battery
Not every invitation is a requirement, and not every gathering is restorative. During the holidays, our social battery is often under higher demand than usual, leading to a state of quiet exhaustion. Before you commit to your next event, take a moment for a quick Relationship Audit: ask yourself if this connection truly charges your battery or if it’s an energy drain you’re accepting out of habit.
By setting intentional boundaries and choosing where to spend your presence, you ensure that when you do show up, you are doing so with genuine energy rather than reactive fatigue.
5. Simplify Your Schedule

Between shopping, cooking, decorating, and attending events, it’s tempting to pack your schedule to the brim.
However, overcommitting can lead to stress and burnout. Delegate tasks where possible and give yourself permission to say no to activities if you need to.
Review your plans, prioritise, and plan your tasks and events. Keep a tab on what you need to do Now, what needs to be done Today, and what can wait for Later, and revise this list daily.
6. The Power Of Micro-Escape!
When the festive noise becomes a sensory overload, the most productive thing you can do is step away. A Micro-Escape could be a three-minute intentional pause to recalibrate your nervous system, stepping into a quiet room or taking a short walk outside. Use those few minutes to reset your nervous system, clear overwhelm and reduce any thoughts that mind games.
Engaging in a simple sensory grounding exercise, like noticing the cool air on your skin or the rhythm of your breath, acts as a venting valve for holiday pressure, allowing you to return to the group feeling centered and calm.
Self-Care Rituals Are Important!
Amid the hustle and bustle, don’t forget to care for yourself. Schedule time for activities that nourish your mind and body, whether it’s a quiet walk, a warm bath, or a favorite meditation track. Even 10 minutes of calming meditation each day can help you stay centered and resilient throughout the season.
ZEN-it's meditation practices like our Yoga Nidra by the Sea, or Bells for Calm tracks (from our Meditation Menu) can help soothe, ground and calm you, offering an oasis of calm in the storm.
The holidays are a precious time to celebrate life and loved ones. By setting intentions, practicing gratitude, staying present, simplifying your schedule, and prioritizing self-care, you can embrace the season with joy and mindfulness. Remember, a mindful holiday is about finding moments of peace and happiness in the midst of all the preparations that we worry about.
Here’s to a holiday season that’s as mindful as it is magical!
